About Homoeopathy

David Readman BSc, RSHom

My interest in homoeopathy developed as I watched my son go through the usual medical treatments for repeated middle ear infections. As a biochemist, but realising that strict science is only a part of the picture, I wanted to understand how the classical homoeopathic process truly cured his condition while antibiotics and grommets only offered temporary relief. My other vocations as a counsellor, teacher and carer, as well as my horticultural interests, helped my four years of training for the Diploma of the School of Homoeopathy. I qualified for Registration with the Society of Homeopaths in 2002.

I undertake regular supervision of myself and my practice, participate in a peer supervision group and am updated through continuing professional development within the profession. I have also supervised student homoeopaths, and am involved in research testing (proving) of new remedies.
I look forward to a time when practitioners of all branches of medicine work together, combining and sharing skills to create a healthier, more complete holistic health service.

What is Homoeopathy?

In 1796, a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, developed a different approach to the cure of the sick which he called Homoeopathy (from the Greek words meaning similar suffering). Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier, he realised that there were two ways of treating ill-health: the way of opposites, and the way of similars. In the latter, the Homoeopathic way, a dynamically prepared minute dose of a substance is given to the patient, which in a substantial dose would cause similar symptoms in a healthy person, following the principle of 'Like cures Like'.

How does it work?

Homoeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body's own healing power: when perfectly well we have the ability to throw off most illnesses by ourselves without resorting to medications. When the healing process is faulty, blocked or slow, symptoms of illness are caused as the body attempts to correct the imbalance caused by disease. The homoeopathic remedy acts as a stimulus to the curative powers of the body. To provide this stimulus the homoeopath must follow strict, proven guidelines to prescribe a suitable remedy in the right dosage for you.

What will the homoeopath need to know from you?

Each person reacts in different ways to the same illness. To find a suitable remedy for your individual symptoms, the homoeopath will need to know not only your physical symptoms but also as much as possible about yourself and how your symptoms affect you. You will be asked questions about your illness, your life, about the health of your family past and present, so the first consultation for an adult usually takes between one and two hours. The homoeopathic process is a cooperative effort and the homoeopath depends on accurate and detailed information to determine the correct remedy for you. Do not be afraid to mention something you think is unusual or unimportant; consultations are confidential.

What does treatment involve?

Usually the remedy will not be given at the time of the interview, but will be posted to you some days later. The homoeopath will spend time examining your information closely to determine the best remedy for you. At the time of the interview you will receive directions about taking the remedy, and the few substances to avoid which may effect the remedy action. Please tell the homoeopath about any medicine that you are already taking, or any dental treatment you are undertaking. Because other treatments may affect the outcome of your homoeopathic treatment you should not start any other form of medication without first consulting your homoeopath - even for headaches, coughs or colds.

What can you expect to happen?

The remedy stimulates the body's own healing mechanisms, and thus there are a number of possible changes. It occasionally happens that the symptoms appear worse for a short time, after which a period of recovery should begin. Alternatively patients often experience an initial period of exceptional well being and optimism. Your homoeopath is able to assess your progress towards healing and is available by telephone or interview, to work with you through this process.

How quickly will you be cured?

This depends on what sort of illness you have. A very slowly developing complaint will not disappear overnight, but other complaints can get better quickly. Complicated cases are cured from the inside, working outwards. This means that the superficial, outer symptoms, such as skin disorders are often the last to go. Be patient, it is much better for you to be cured of the cause of your illness and its symptoms, rather than merely to relieve symptoms. The second consultation is usually 4-6 weeks after the first, and like all subsequent sessions is usually 30-40 minutes long, to allow the homoeopath to evaluate your progress. Intervals between further consultations vary from 4 weeks to several months depending on the progress of the individual case. Interim short appointments can be made for support while the remedy process is working, with a limited phone-in service also available.
The ongoing therapeutic relationship with your homoeopath may last as long as you wish to remain registered with them.
EVERY CASE IS DIFFERENT, JUST AS NO TWO PATIENTS ARE ALIKE.

Acute illness

Acute conditions are a manifestation of the underlying constitution, which is different for each individual. Except in exceptional circumstances, the homoeopath is willing to consult on acute conditions only in those patients who attend (or have attended) an initial, full case taking, allowing the homoeopath an insight into the constitutional makeup of the patient.

The fees cover consultations, any additional time required to consider the case, prescriptions (when required) with postage and packing.

Please note that the full payment will be expected for a cancellation unless 24 hours notice is given.

HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES:
Selecting remedy, potency and taking the right dose

The remedy: the correct remedy is selected to match the patient's symptoms. This is the remedy that would best "echoes" the symptoms in a similar but healthy person: all drugs/medicines/chemicals/poisons have the potential to cause as well as to cure the same symptoms. Homoeopathic remedies are prepared by dilution and agitation (succussion) that removes any harmful toxic effects of the original substance while simultaneously increasing the curative effect.

The potency: the intensity of curative effect in the correct remedy has to be matched to the strength of symptoms, depth of illness and vitality of the individual patient. This is done by selecting the correct potency, identified by the number given after the name of the remedy. This indicates the number of serial dilutions and successions the remedy has gone through during preparation. The higher the number, the greater the potency.

The dose: taking a homoeopathic remedy is not a question of quantity but quality. The number of pills taken at one time does not matter: the entire jar of pills in one go would produce the same effect as taking just one pill. This would be one dose, so it makes economic sense to take just the one pill!

The second dose: further exposure to the same remedy at the same potency. This could be 5 minutes or 5 months later depending on the change of symptoms in the individual. The timing should match the need of the patient according to how their symptoms persist or have changed. For self prescribing, the patient should carefully observe changes in symptoms after the first dose. Changes may include temporary aggravations, or activations, as well as improvements. Allow any aggravations to subside then observe overall improvements. Take a second dose (another single pill) when improvement is subsiding and original symptoms seem to be returning.

Routine repeat dosing: with low potencies of 6c or 12c it is usually safe to routinely take pills 2 or 3 times daily without much observation for up to a week. These potencies usually have low-key effects so it is difficult to overdo the dose and may not produce strong enough reactions to be observed. If any strong aggravation or worsening of symptoms occurs, simply stop taking any further doses and wait. Call the prescriber if unwanted symptoms persist. With medium potencies of 30c or 200c it is advisable to take single doses and observe the body's reaction before repeating as described above. Where the original symptoms are clear and the remedy is obvious, regular single daily doses for a few days at these potencies could be considered.

TUNING IN TO THE BODY

There has been a huge increase in interest in complementary therapies, as people search for more complete ways of healing and healthcare. No longer satisfied with pharmaceutical drugs to suppress the symptoms of ill-health, they are turning to a range of alternatives that offer support to the body's own healing mechanisms. This is where the term "complementary medicine" is useful, as these therapies work with the body, completing and aiding the systems that are already there. After all, nature's design has produced a wonderful self repairing system that sometimes just needs a bit of help to put itself right.

FALLING ILL, OR KEEPING HEALTHY?

It is the stresses and strains of life, and how we learn to deal with these, that weaken our systems and allow illness to develop. A healthy diet and balanced lifestyle relieve the pressure on our immune system, which is constantly battling to keep us on track and able to adjust to everything that the world throws at us. It's actually amazing how well most people are most of the time, considering the poor quality of most modern foods and the pressures we put our minds, bodies and emotions under. This is a testament to the incredible self repair and balancing mechanisms that we all possess: it's when we get ill that we notice where the weaknesses are in the system.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Having respect for the complexity and efficiency of our own repair mechanisms is the starting point for complementary therapists. Each therapy has its own way of tapping into and stimulating this, so there is likely to be a therapy to suit everyone. At Charlestown Natural Health Centre, there is a range of practitioners specialising in such diverse therapies as aromatherapy and massage, Bowen technique, spinal touch therapy, homoeopathy, hypnotherapy, nutritional therapy and reflexology. Each of these offers a complete, or holistic, approach to the patient's well being, rather than taking a symptom as an illness that "just happens" and being beyond our control. The therapies on offer at Charlestown allow the patient to take control and understand their illness, stress or discomfort, as well as supporting the body's natural defences to rid itself of the illness and the symptoms. The range of therapies allows for the fact that we are all individuals, so each of us responds better to one approach than another. Call the Centre for a friendly, no-commitment chat to find which therapy best suits your needs.
Whether you feel stressed and want help relaxing, or you have a longterm illness, or if you just want yourself or your children to be well balanced and able to throw off the strains of everyday living, Charlestown Natural Health Centre should have a therapy to suit your needs.

Fear of Flying:

Arg-Nit: No 1 Remedy for this complaint. Useful for anticipatory anxiety with gastric problems (belching/flatulence). Suits warm blooded people with a tendency to feel hurried and impulsive. There may be a fear of failure when having to perform in public, which is often justified as they rush through things and get into a mess. Better in open air; walking fast. Worse in crowds; eating sweets (diarrhoea).

Calc-carb: Feels fat/flabby; chilly, easily over exerted and sweaty (esp. back of head). Sour smelling, may fear many things (dark, animals, insects). Poor digestion and assimilation of food. Better when constipated; dry weather. Worse for heights; getting cold or wet; milk.

Phos: Bubbly, affectionate and sympathetic, but poor boundaries mean they get exhausted by the problems of others. Impressionable, almost naïve. Fears and anxieties. Burning heat and pains; tend to bleed easily. Desire spicy food, ice cream. Better for cold drinks; eating; sleep (even a short nap).

Borax: Very sensitive, esp to noise; easily startled. Fear of and worse from downward motion. Fear of falling, bridges, infection. Irritable. Mouth ulcers. Worse for eating fruit.

Stress reduction and Homoeopathy

Reduce stress and improve staff health by encouraging awareness of the early warning signs of illness: deal with stress before falling over.
Yes: we have
stress management and relaxation techniques, accepting that all stress is real and we have to learn to cope with it.
But with increased
awareness, including using homoeopathy, we can deal with the reasons why we get stressed, and make life seem less stressful. This avoids using chemical and drug medication, focussing instead on improving our bodies’ own repair mechanisms. Our systems become well balanced and better able to ride out the buffeting that life seems to send us. Respect for the natural healing powers: our bodies are “designed” to work perfectly, so why not use proven methods that aim to rebalance our systems with this in mind?

Prevention is cure: the body produces symptoms to try to rebalance deep inside, so just dealing with symptoms meddles with the body’s attempt to cope with illness. Symptoms are the end result of our illness, so treating them alone is too late, although this may be needed if that is how ill we’ve become! Helping ourselves to regain inner balance improves our ability to deal with what life throws at us, so our body has less need to produce symptoms.

We are all individual and our bodies have our own ways of coping, so we all have differing symptoms even in the same situations. This is why the same stress factors (eg tiredness, noise, arguments etc) affect each of us differently:

a) STRESS FACTOR SOME PEOPLE FEEL STRESS ? SYMPTOMS

b) “
SOME FEEL A BIT STRESSED ? OTHER SYMPTOMS

c) “ SOME PEOPLE DON’T NO SYMPTOMS

It is the “?” in these processes that is the key to understanding what we can do for ourselves in dealing with stress. What is our body’s automatic response to the stressed feeling that converts it into symptoms we can see and feel and that hurt us? Learning to identify the “?” in our individual case is the awareness that can be developed.

About Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is suitable for all age groups, from six years of age until the mature years, encompassing emotional problems of childhood and adolescence, relationship difficulties and childbirth, personal and spiritual development issues and mind/body healing.

There are countless misconceptions about hypnosis, many of which originate from the past and occasionally less- ethical demonstrations of stage entertainment, which resulted in a general belief that all control is relinquished whilst `under` the influence! So what is hypnosis?

It is a state of altered awareness where the subconscious part of the mind is able to respond to positive suggestions more easily and creatively, where it can then focus on the things which the person wishes to change and on the best ways of achieving this, with a freedom from analytical or anxious thoughts In this state of pleasant relaxation everything the therapist says is heard and the client remains totally `in control`. The client is not asleep or unconscious and will remember what they or the therapist has said in the session. Hypnosis is a natural part of our lives, we enter varying degrees of this state of relaxation each and every day, whilst watching movies, reading, day-dreaming and driving ( especially on motorways). These are perfectly normal occurrences and can often be very productive.

Hypnotherapy & Hypno-analysis

Hypnosis - What is it? Lets get one thing straight right away! Hypnosis CANNOT control your mind. You cannot be made to do anything that you don't want to. So please put right out of your mind anything that you have seen on television or elsewhere with a stage hypnotist. The people involved are carefully chosen and although it may seem strange, they really want to be exhibitionists albeit subconsciously.

Someone who is 'in hypnosis' is unlikely to feel that they are in a 'trance' or anything else for that matter, because there is actually no such thing as a hypnotised state. A little bewildered? I'm not surprised, so let me say what it is. The hypnotised condition is one of very deep relaxation and yet at the same time, experiencing heightened concentration and heightened awareness.

During hypnosis the sub-conscious mind is open to suggestion and will be able to accept alternative ideas and thoughts which will be of benefit to the whole being. Once again I will point out that the sub-conscious will not accept anything harmful so hypnotherapy is a very safe and a very gentle therapy which at the same time is very effective.

The state of hypnosis is a very pleasant experience and is a totally natural phenomenon as well as being very relaxing. During the session you will probably find that your senses, such as hearing and memory will be greatly enhanced and you will find it quite easy to converse, when necessary with your therapist. Hypnosis is induced purely by the use of the therapist's voice. Fantastic isn't it? A therapy that uses no drugs and is probably more effective for more problems than anything else.

There are TWO different treatments but both using Hypnosis:

SUGGESTION THERAPY - which is used for simple problems such as smoking, nail-biting, driving test & examination nerves, fear of flying, slimming, relaxation, confidence boosting, etc. as well as boosting your sporting performance. These will usually require only one or two sessions.

ANALYTICAL THERAPY - is used to discover the CAUSES of psychological problems (although, of course, one does sometimes mix the two therapies). Whereas suggestion therapy treats the symptoms, Hypno-analysis seeks to discover the originating cause of the problem and in so doing the problem is released. Naturally this route takes quite a bit longer but once achieved the results are permanent.

Your Consultant Hypnotherapist at CNHC, Richard Wells, is a fully qualified and experienced therapist. He has a diploma in hypnotherapy with advanced certificates in Smoking Cessation and Sports Hypnosisand is a member of The International Association of Hypno-analysts.

About Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn’t until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as ‘zone therapy’. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms.

How can reflexology help me?

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:

• Back Pain
• Migraine
• Infertility
• Arthritis
• Sleep disorders
• Hormonal imbalances
• Sports injuries
• Digestive disorders
• Stress-related conditions
Reflexology does not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being.

While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.

With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.

What happens when I go for treatment?

On the first visit, the reflexology practitioner will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle.

The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person.

A professionally trained reflexologist can detec subtle changes in specific points on the feet, an by. working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body.

A treatment session usually lasts for about one hour. A course of treatment may be recommended depending on your body’s needs.

How will I feel after a reflexology treatment?

After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; sometimes people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process.

This is vital information to feed back to the reflexologist as it shows how your body is responding to treatment This will ~h~eIp the reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.

The Association of Reflexologists

The Association was founded in 1984. It arose from a need to establish standards and to provide a network of qualified practitioners to which the public could refer with confidence.

The aim of the Association is to help maintain a high standard of practice and patient care and to promote reflexology. Members are bound by the Association’s Codes of Practice and Ethics.

The Association publishes a Referral Register of practitioners for the benefit of members of the public who wish to consult a qualified and experienced reflexologist. This can be found on the Association’s website at: www.aor.org.uk.

For those wishing to learn to practise the art of reflexology, the Association also publishes a list of recognised and accredited training establishments.

About Indian Head Massage

'A deeply relaxing therapeutic massage'

•Can help mind and memory and create more awareness, mental clarity and focus
•Can improve the nervous system
•Can improve physical and emotional effects of stress
•Can improve circulation
•Can improve hair and scalp condition
•Can improve muscle tone to upper body
•Can stimulate energy levels

Indian Champissage is a natural therapy that incorporates many traditional philosophies and medicines.
The primary modality is massage, in essence touch - communicating care and compassion through the gentle art of massage. Physiologically it relaxes tense and tired muscles, improves circulation of blood and lymph and helps mobilise stiff joints. The method of alternating movements of friction and stroking, stimulate and calm the mind and body invoking a deep state of relaxation. It is this state that the body's innate healing mechanisms can really be put into play, when the person is feeling relaxed, nurtured and secure.

Acupressure points are also used to emphasise this effect, a modality developed from Chinese acupuncture which interprets the body's energies flow through channels or meridians which can be accessed at various points to influence the flow of energy, or Chi, to restore balance. All the major 12 meridians can be affected during a treatment therefore the whole body is influenced on a subtle level.

We also work on another "life-energy system" important to human health, the spiritual energy. This flow of subtle energy enters the body through different forms and pathways, one is the system of seven major energy centres in the body known as Chakras. The word comes from the ancient Sanskrit word for "wheel", which according to ancient Hindu and Yogic teaching , these major chakras are directly linked to different regions of the body and particular endocrine glands which absorb and distribute this life energy (or prana).

In totality the effects of the treatment are beneficial for treating a wide range of ailments leaving the whole body feeling refreshed and re-energised!

About Swedish Massage

What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish Massage is usually applied to the whole body using simple oils and lotions.

It was developed over 150 years ago when many different methods were adopted and combined into a coherent system. It was also based on new scientific discoveries of the time for example the circulation of lymph and blood around the body. It was used for the treatment of disease and pain.

Basic Swedish massage is a relaxing treatment that relieves stress, improves sleep and enhances circulation. Muscular-skeletal problems are eased and lymph encouraged to flow thereby enabling detoxification and can speed up the healing process. Physical and emotional tensions are alleviated to give an holistic treatment to mind, body and emotions.

Benefits of Massage

•Can be stimulating or deeply relaxing
•Can relieve tension and stress
•Can improve muscle tone and relieve fatigue
•Can improve circulation
•Can improve skin tone
•Can improve the immune system
•Can increase energy levels
•Can help to identify areas of imbalance

Thermal Auricular Therapy

Hopi Ear Candles

Thermal Auricular therapy is an ancient natural therapy involving the use of ear candles. The use of this ancient and natural therapy has been handed down to us by the peoples of Asia and Native American Indians.

Ear candles have been used traditionally by Shaman healers especially of the Hopi people ( translated "Hopi" means "peaceful ones"), who are a Pueblo tribe renowned for their extensive knowledge of healing and spiritual lifestyle. Traditionally used to cleanse and harmonise before ceremony, in the west they are used more specifically to treat health problems as well as benefiting from the relaxing and calming effect on the whole system.

The candles are made of valuable honey extracts, 100% pure beeswax, crushed traditional Indian medicinal herbs (sage, chamomile & St.John's wort, and pure essential oils) beta-carotene and a pesticide -free woven cotton.

Ear candle treatment is especially useful for people that suffer from:
• Excessive or compacted wax in the ears
• Irritations in the ears or sinuses
• Pressure regulation in the case of headaches
• Migranes and Rhinitis
• Tinnitus and ringing in the ears
• Energetic revitalisation in cases of hearing impairment
• Sinusitis
• Glue ear, Otitis media
• Relief for Meniere’s disease and Vertigo

Immediate relief for any of the above complaints can be found - but in many cases a course of treatments may be required in order to produce the best results. It is extremely effective if regular monthly treatments are done.

Treatment takes approximately 45 minutes which includes burning a candle in both ears and finishing with a facial massage. Cost is £28.00

This therapy is not suitable for people that suffer any of the following conditions to receive treatment:
•No ear drum or severe damage to it
•Infection in the ear or around it
•Recent surgery to facial or head area.

How ear candles work:

The action of the lighted candle creates a warm and dry air flow in the outer ear. In terms of traditional medicine, the damp energy which causes many sinus/ear problems, is replaced by warming/drying effects of fire energy, thereby relieving symptoms. The downward gentle vortex of warm air also has a gentle massage-like effect on the eardrum, inducing a pleasant warm sensation which helps rebalance the pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is soothing and helpful for earache and headache, ear noise, stress and nervousness. Treatment may also spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell, even when the nose was blocked before treatment.

Furthermore, the whole ceremony brings a wonderful relaxation, a deep sense of security and a feeling of happiness.

About The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique
A Complementory Therapy Explained

The Bowen technique is soft tissue therapy from Australia that balances and stimulates energy flows, this encourages the body to reset and heal. It was the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates [469-399 B.C.] who wrote ' The body heals itself; the physician is only natures assistant.' This is a philosophy adopted by many of today's complementary therapies including Bowen. With this holistic approach to healing the Bowen technique can be applied to any condition the body is capable of manifesting, from chronic compliments such as pelvic or back pain to acute sports injuries.

A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle rolling moves across muscles and tendons, these moves are usually made with the client laying on a couch and may be made through light clothing. Because the treatment is so gentle it is considered safe to use on anyone, from newborn babies to the elderly. There are frequent and important pauses between sets of moves; these pauses allow the body to 'process' the information given. By combining sets of moves the practitioner addresses the body as a whole and also targets specific areas of concern.

On completion of a Bowen treatment the client is given aftercare advice that is designed to help the body through a process of reorganization and adjustment. An important aspect of the Bowen technique is that clients are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health in terms of water intake and exercise.
I believe that the full potential of the Bowen technique is still to be realized, particularly in the areas of prevention of illness and also optimising performance in any sport or fitness program.

Nick Payton B.T.A.A.

What is the Bowen Technique?

Tom Bowen, an Australian developed this amazing holistic healing technique from the 1950's till his death in 1982. In 1986 the Bowen academy of Australia was founded and today there are over 9000 Bowen therapists worldwide.
The Bowen technique stimulates the body to balance, reset and heal. Bowen's unique and gentle; rolling-type moves are made at precise points of the body over muscles and tendons. There are frequent and important pauses between each set of moves to allow the body to absorb and process each set.
The Bowen therapist does not diagnose but rather treats the person as a whole unit rather than just the presenting symptom; Bowen embraces the physical, chemical, emotional and mental aspects of the person receiving a treatment. A Bowen treatment may also improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping your body assimilate nutrients and eliminating toxins. Clients often report an overall sense of well-being.
The Bowen Technique is not necessarily a 'long term' treatment programme. A small number of treatments are often all that is required even for long standing complaints. A treatment lasts about one hour and can be given through light clothing.

The cost of Bowen treatment at Charlestown Natural Health Centre is £25 per session
IMPORTANT Bowen therapists registered with the Bowen Association UK adhere to a strict code of professional ethics, are covered with indemnity insurance, have completed training in anatomy & physiology and have at least two days post graduate training every year. Bowen Therapy History. In the late 1950's an Australian Tom Bowen, discovered relationships existed between health complaints and particular patterns of muscular dysfunction. Years of research and development resulted in a unique system of muscular stimulation, which brought about long-term muscular/skeletal corrections and improvement to many other health complaints in his patients. Tom Bowen referred to his work as soft tissue therapy. Which he continued to develop right up until his death in 1982.

Walking For Health.

Walking is a gentle exercise yet still increases the heart rate, and this combined with the muscle action involved increases the amount of oxygen available to muscles and vital organs including the brain. Because of this you think more clearly and lose excess weight, not only through the burning of calories but also the improved function of organs such as the liver and the digestive system.
Another benefit of walking is that circulation of lymph is increased. This helps drain excess fluid from tissue spaces, and also the transportation of vitamins A,D,E and K and importantly an increased immune response.
Regular walking gives the most benefit; 20 minutes walk four times a week as a minimum.

The answer is, virtually anything! Here are just some of the conditions acupuncture can help:

· Anxiety and depression
· Arthritis and rheumatism
· Back pain
· Headache and migraine
· Asthma and allergies
· Skin rashes and eczema
· Stress, grief
· ME
· Urinary and bowel disorders
· Sciatica
· Digestive disorders
· IBS
· Fertility and pregnancy
· Menopause
· Menstrual problems

… and much, much more

There are a huge range of conditions acupuncture has been shown to be beneficial for. If your complaint isn’t listed here, just call to find out how it might help you specifically.

Please also bear in mind that the benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, bet- ter sleep as well as an enhanced sense of well being.

People often feel better in themselves with treatment, and more resourceful in facing the world and the challenges of work, family or relationships.

How does it work?

The question everyone asks! According to Oriental philosophy, our health is dependent on the flow of ‘qi’ or energy moving through the body in channels or meridians.

When qi is in balance and flowing smoothly, good physical and emotional health is maintained. On the other hand, pain or illness are the result of unbalanced qi.

Acupuncture can adjust the body’s energy flow by the insertion of tiny stainless steel needles into specific locations on the body. Imagine the meridians as a series of streams or rivers flowing throughout the body. Sometimes these streams can get blocked or silted up, and acupuncture can unblock the flow or strengthen it to get it moving again.

From a conventional Western point of view, acupuncture is thought to work by stimulating the nervous system to release chemicals such as endorphins and serotonins – and the chemicals help to change the experience of pain and stress.

Does it really work?

Acupuncture goes back 5,000 years, and empirical testing in the East has long supported its effectiveness. Also, the millions of people who use it regularly around the world will tell you it does! A study carried out by researchers at Southampton University and University College London has resulted in solid proof that acupuncture, already one of the UK’s most popular complementary therapies, is consistently effective in alleviating all types of conditions. For more details click here BBC article

A survey carried out in May 2002 by the BMA found that 79% of GPs would like to see acupuncture offered in the NHS. (Source: British Medical Association )

Currently 1 in 5 people use some form of complementary or alternative medicine, with acupuncture being by far one of the most popular. In fact, it is now reported to be available in 86% of NHS chronic pain relief services. (British Medical Association (BMA))

The British Acupuncture Council website features articles about research showing the benefits of acupuncture for a range of conditions.

Isn’t it just all in the mind?

Prospective patients often ask me whether they need to ‘believe’ in acupuncture for it to work. The answer is a definitive ‘no’ – acupuncture works regardless! The proof is in acupuncture carried out on animals, who know nothing of the placebo effect and who have no expectations of treatment, but who nevertheless respond very well to acupuncture.

What does it feel like?

Acupuncture is virtually painless. When an acupuncture needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache – if felt at all. During treatment, patients often experience a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

How long does a session last?

The initial consultation takes an hour and a half and is designed to provide all the information necessary to make a complete individual diagnosis. Follow-up sessions last between 45 minutes and an hour.

How many treatments would I need?

This is a really difficult question to answer as every person is different. Most patients attend weekly for the first few weeks. After between 3-6 treatments you can expect visits to be spaced out (say fortnightly or three-weekly), or for the treatment to be complete. After that patients feel so much better that they usually come back every few months or just seasonally for preventative treatment and maintenance.

JULIA BIGGS: PRACTITIONER PROFILE

Born in London, Julia was educated at St Martin-in-the-Fields High School and went on to graduate from London University with a BSc Honours Degree in Psychology.

On leaving University, Julia became an advertising copywriter, working first in London agencies, and then setting up her own successful freelance copywriting business, working for clients such as Sainsburys and Toshiba computers.

After 20 years’ copywriting, Julia felt the need to do something that was not only more satisfying on personal level, but which also contributes positively to the well-being of the community. Having had acupuncture herself for many years and experiencing first-hand the profound changes it can make to health and life, Julia switched track and completed a full-time 3-year course at the UK’s leading acupuncture college – the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, Berkshire.

An integrated approach

Julia practises an integrated approach, combining two styles of acupuncture: Five Element and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). This provides a thorough understanding of the whole range of conditions which may be affecting any individual, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. This is how acupuncture treats the whole person, not just a presenting symptom.

The goal is always to treat the root cause of ill health rather than suppressing the manifestation of the problem. Through effective diagnosis and treatment of the root cause, long-lasting relief from presenting symptoms is provided.

Membership of the British Acupuncture Council

Julia is a member of The British Acupuncture Council and has full professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover.

BAcC members have an extensive training in acupuncture, anatomy and physiology and biomedical sciences appropriate to the practice of acupuncture in the UK.
British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) members observe the Code of Safe Practice which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation for all equipment. Members use high-quality pre-sterilised needles which are disposed of after each treatment.

About Spinal Touch Therapy

Spinal Touch Therapy

Spinal Touch is a simple yet powerful muscle relaxation technique used for re-aligning the body at its centre of gravity. The body’s Centre of Gravity is located at the lumbo-sacral articulation( 5th lumbar vertebra and the 1st sacral segment ) All forces acting upon the body are concentrated at this site. Postural and pelvic distortion is recognised and assessed when the client is stood at the plumb line. This form of assessment enables the practitioner to use the appropriate method to help correct the sacral distortions.
Spinal re-alignment is carried out on a couch and is done solely through a specific muscle relaxation technique and works to correct all types of problems with a non-forceful approach. The light touch technique covers the spine, back, abdomen, shoulders and head, thus facilitating painless postural correction.  This allows vital organs to relocate into their correct anatomical position,  improved function and enhancing essential bodily systems to work more effectively and efficiently.
Conditions that can be helped are acute or chronic pain, anxiety, back, neck and shoulder pain, scoliosis, excessive thoracic or lumbar curvature, repetitive strain injuries, whip lash injuries, insomnia, gastro-enteric conditions, respiratory problems, stress related dis-ease and many more disorders.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic - ( ther-a-pu-tik ) a. pert. to healing

Massage - a curative treatment of physical disorders by kneading, rubbing etc carried out by a specialist

The various techniques and movements used in this type of treatment  are those which have an effect on all bodily systems. ( skin, muscles, circulation, lymphatic drainage, elimination, nervous system and some internal organs ) and the carrier oils chosen and used in the treatment have healing properties of their own.
Massage focuses on total body & mind relaxation, initiating the interaction between our physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects. It helps to bridge the gap between these four aspects, by creating a harmonious and balanced environment internally and externally thus allowing the mind and body to communicate and listen to one another. Massage alone can help alleviate muscular, skeletal, and neuralgic pain and aid the body in its recovery from  physical and emotional injury and trauma.

Aromatherapy

Aroma - fragrance in plants; perfume or flavour; charm; atmosphere

Therapy - remedial treatment

Aromatic -  fragrant; spicy; a plant or drug with fragrant smell

Aromatherapy by definition is a therapy using organic material derived from plant sources. Within the scope of Aromatherapy as we know it today, the organic material from the plant undergoes varying degrees of change in order for us to capture the essence of the plant. We call these essences Essential Oils. These essential oils are often blended in vegetable oils for use as a treatment in the form of massage - quite different from therapeutic massage in that the techniques of application are different  and the  carrier or base oils used contain essential oils in a certain % determined by the clients requirements. Aromatherapy massage can relieve muscular, skeletal and nerve orientated pain and discomfort. It may help focus the mind by reducing  physical , emotional and psychological tension. It can also help with respiratory problems, insomnia, anxiety, skin problems and health issues associated with stress.
The aroma together with the massage can have a relaxing or stimulating effect on all levels .Essential oils can also be used therapeutically in creams, gels, baths, vaporisers, sprays etc..

Relaxation & Stress management

Relaxation - act of relaxing, state of being

Stress -  upon structures, or upon people, occurs when more pressure or strain is being applied then they are designed to withstand

There are many clues you can look for that will give you an indication that you might be experiencing the effects of stress. These can be physical, mental or emotional and can vary from person to person.
A certain amount of stress is however normal, natural and a necessary part of life and without it we would miss out on those things that makes life exciting, challenging and fun. The key to managing stress is balance.

The thing to remember is that each of us is an individual with our own unique threshold. Upbringing, education, life experience, outlook and our knowledge of ourselves allows us to make decisions about taking action over stress. Stress management does not come about by adopting a passive attitude, but by a proactive approach and taking action to maintain balance.
The Fight or Flight response is a life saving mechanism, designed to help us in the event of immediate physical danger, one which we would of had to rely on when we still lived in caves. However in our modern day society, although the demands are increasing they are not usually  of an immediate physical nature and the reactions required are not those of fight or flight. We have vivid imaginations, powerful memory ,conscience and a high degree of social expectations all of which initiate change at an alarming rate. The body however is unable to differentiate between real physical danger and perceived dangers and then the Fight and Flight response is triggered. When triggered inappropriately time and time again, we quite literally stew in our own stress chemicals causing that uncomfortable feeling called anxiety. This is when long term health problems are stored up. However with self knowledge and some practice we can go a long way towards helping ourselves reduce the stress and strain and regain balance back into our lives.

Self help strategies can be implemented into your personal programme to regain that missing link - balance, thus allowing for understanding,  personal growth, re-educating your physical and emotional response in the world you live in. Relaxation is for living.

I have 15 years of medical, surgical, theatre and community nursing experience.
Gaining qualifications in Anatomy & Physiology, Therapeutic Massage and Aromatherapy in 1997, made me decide to give up my nursing post in 1998, to work as co-ordinator of Complementary Therapies in a local hospice. Here I gained much insight into illness and dis-ease process and treatments (orthodox and alternative). During this time I  became a tutor for the Association of  Natural Medicine and taught at diploma level.    I have also produced guidelines, protocols and initiatives, implemented into  hospice care.   My involvement in teaching/lecturing to  health care professionals in the UK and to overseas care providers   across the international network of  palliative care has enabled me to travel with my work abroad.
To date I have taught massage/aromatherapy in palliative care settings in Taiwan, East Malaysia, and Northern Italy. All of these have given me a broad spectrum of knowledge in my quest to advocate good health and alternative ways of achieving it.  This experience is attributable to the lives of those people that I have come into contact with. Without the richness and diversity of cultures that I have met on my travels and through life, I would not be able to bring and share with  you the knowledge, expertise

and love for what I do.

I now work from two clinics.

Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu ?

Japanese in origin – Shiatsu literally translated means ‘finger pressure’.
It involves the client lying comfortably on a mat or sitting in a chair whilst the practitioner uses her/his thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply gentle pressure to different parts of the body to revitalise, balance and relax.

It is based on the principle that we have within our bodies an invisible network of ‘meridians’ – channels through wich energy (ki) flows.  Along these channels exist pressure points (tsubo’s).

Blocked or stagnant energy can cause many ailments and directly affect our sense of well being.  Shiatsu uses the pressure points to release blocked energy and to create a flow of harmonious balanced energy within the mind and body.

Techniques include gentle rocking, stretching, manipulation and holding.

Please wear loose comfortable clothing.

Reiki

Reiki is one of the most ancient healing methods known to mankind.  It originated in Tibet and was rediscovered in the 19th century by a Japanese monk named Dr Mikao Usui.  The tradition of Reiki is referred to in 2500 year old writings in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language. The Usai system of Natural Healing, named after Dr.Usai, has been passed down by Reiki Masters since that  time and is today practiced worldwide.

As humans we have Universal Life Energy all around us and within us. The Japanese word “rei-ki” consists of two syllables: “rei” which describes the cosmic, universal aspect of the energy and “ki”, which the fundamental life force flowing and pulsating in all living things.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural and simple healing method which allows you to absorb more life force energy.  The Reiki method vitalizes your life force and balances the energies in your body.  This natural healing energy flows I a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the giver.  The laying on of the hands directs the healing energy into the body of the receiver, the giver is used as a channel to conduct the Universal Life Energy. As a result, no personal energy is drawn or drained from the giver, who is simultaneously charged and strengthened.

The Effects of Reiki…

Reiki passes from the giver to the receiver, working on many different levels.  It brings all aspects of the receiver’s being into harmonious balance, according to their individual needs and desires.

  • Balances the organs and glands and their bodily functions
  • Releases blocks and suppressed feelings
  • Promotes natural self-healing
  • Adapts to the natural needs of the receiver
  • Balances the energies in the body
  • Enhances personal awareness and helps meditative states
  • Relaxes and reduces stress
  • Promotes creativity
  • Strengthens life force energy
  • Strengthens intuition
  • Treats symptoms and causes of illnesses
  • Heals holistically
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Relieves pain
  • Clears toxins

A Reiki Treatment…..

Lasts approximately one hour.  Usually the receiver remains fully clothed and lies down comfortably on a couch. However Reiki can be given seated equally well if lying  flat is a problem. The Giver holds their hands in different positions over the body (sometimes just hovering above the body or gently resting on the body) .  The treatment is very calm and relaxed, the receiver may or may not be aware of different sensations of heat or vibration and colour as the practitioner works.
After a treatment the receiver can feel lighter and clearer in mind and body, calm and deeply relaxed.

Reiki Practitioners:

Marianne Browning,  Kellie Clarke, Jeanette McNally.

Sometimes Reiki healing can be given as part of another treatment, eg Massage, either during or at the end of session.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

M.L.D. (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)is a specialized therapy that uses gentle rhythmic pumping techniques designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system, unlike usual massage that concentrates on the muscle, this is very light and aims to move the skin over the muscle, as this is where the lymph vessels lie, by stretching the vessels in two directions, this stimulates the contraction of the lymphatic vessels, encouraging them to absorb up to 100% more lymph, and after an hours treatment, will still operate at this level for approximately 4 hours.

Hypnobirthing

Contrary to popular opinion, childbirth does not have to be painful...

Science made tremendous medical advances, but also the expectation that perhaps childbirth can be a painful time and therefore that expectation brings with it fear and anxiety. As a result a vicious circle can be formed.

Fear - Pain - Tension - Fear - Pain - Tension

Hypnotherapy can help alleviate negative attitudes and emotions by decreasing the mum-to-be’s fears and anxieties, before, during and after the birthing experience as she feels more in control of the process.

Hypnotherapy has also helped many couples suffering from fertility problems.

. Less stress for mother and baby. Most women feel less mentally and physically exhausted, and even look fit and well afterwards. They remain quite calm and relaxed. Babies have shown to cry less, sleep and feed better, possibly due to a diminished trauma at birth.

. Safer and more effective method. Hypnosis produces calmness and relaxation, physically and mentally, and therefore reduces pain, fluctuating blood pressure, anxiety, stress and nausea.

. Less drug therapy required. Hypnosis is used to significantly reduce discomfort during delivery, if there is a need for analgesia, a reduced amount of drug is effective.

By learning self- hypnosis techniques you will be more relaxed physically, mentally and emotionally.

4 sessions are advised. It is recommended to start from week 32.

Book a session now for a natural, calm and peaceful childbirth experience.
